The Mexican Grand Prix was included in the World Championship for the first time. In practice and race Carel was fighting his own battles with various tailenders. He qualified 18th, behind Phil Hill’s ATS, but in front of the Lotuses of Rodriguez and Amon and the second ATS of Baghetti.
During the race he first had a fight with the ATS of 1961 World Champion Hill until the latter retired on lap 40, and later on Carel had a beef with Siffert's private Lotus-BRM. At the finish line he was tenth and last of the cars still running.
Unsurprisingly victory went to Jim Clark and Team Lotus, with only Brabham (Brabham) and Ginther (BRM) on the same lap.
