The World Championships had already been decided in Italy (won by Clark and Lotus) but that didn’t keep any teams from crossing the Atlantic to race at the Glen. Maybe they were also attracted by the highest prize money of the season. Even Ferrari were there this time around.

After Clark stalled his Lotus on the grid it even looked like it could be a relatively easy victory for the Scuderia’s leading man John Surtees, but on lap 82 out of a 100 he retired, leaving the laurels to BRM. They scored a 1-2 with Graham Hill leading Ginther, who was one lap clear of third placed World Champion Jim Clark.

Carel profited from the many retirements in the final quarter of the race and once again the reliability of his four-cylinder Porsche to finish an unexpected sixth. And although he crossed the line eleven laps in arrears, he deservedly took another point in the World Championship and a more than welcome slice of the prize money.
