As a replacement for the old 718 four-cylinder cars the Porsche factory had come up with a new car using an eight cylinder air-cooled boxer engine. But as Carel stoically drove his faithful 718, Porsche encountered problems with their new design. They even decided not to race them at the Belgian Grand Prix to sort out the problems. In France they were back. It was a very big surprise to all, Porsche themselves included, that they would win their first Grand Prix with the new car. There were more surprises however, amongst them the sixth place Carel took in the old car after having run as high as fifth. In doing so he claimed his second point for the World Championship.

Practice didn’t go particularly well for Carel. He was last at a second from the man in front of him, Jack Lewis in an old Cooper T53. So speed would not do the trick for Carel as usual, but reliability and consistency would once again bring in the results. Initially the race was an affair between Graham Hill in the BRM and Surtees’ Lola, Jim Clark being a distant third. One after the other however, the frontrunners got in some sort of mechanical trouble and they fell back, leaving first place to Dan Gurney in the new Porsche with a lap advantage over Tony Maggs in the Cooper. Apart from these two, Carel was the only other driver to bring a completely healthy car to the finish.
