The Rheims organisers lost the official French Grand Prix to Rouen and decided to run one of their own. Only the works Ferraris and Porsches were absent, but the rest of the Formula 1 world took the race quite seriously.
Carels Porsche ran very well at the fast circuit. He qualified 11th and enjoyed a race-long slipstream battle with Joakim Bonnier in a similar Porsche entered by the Venetian Scuderia SSS. At the finish line the difference between the two cars was only a couple of centimetres in favour of Godin de Beaufort who gained seventh from his Swedish colleague.
Bruce McLaren won the race after a hard-fought battle with Graham Hill and Jack Brabham.
